Women of Disney

by Charm

If there is one thing I really enjoy in life, it’s dreaming of becoming a princess! Haha. That’s why I never get tired of watching Disney princesses. When I was conceptualizing for my mash-up, I thought of the things I want in life, the things that make me happy. And obviously, one of the items on top of the list is “Disney Princesses.” My mash-up was really, really simple. I just wanted to convey that the Disney princesses should not only be admired by little girls. They are in fact women. Thus, I wanted them to be a reflection of what a woman is. A woman encounters challenges, experiences failures, finds love, and makes the society a better place. J

While doing the project, I think downloading the videos was the most difficult part. I lost all of my CD’s and DVD’s because of Ondoy. So I had to search Youtube for the clips I want. There were a lot of Disney movies in Youtube so I guess Disney allows some clips to be uploaded. I didn’t encounter any copyright issues except for Youtube’s notice:

Dear charmee18,

Your video, WOMEN OF DISNEY, may have content that is owned or licensed by Sony Music Entertainment.

No action is required on your part; however...

I still am not receiving any further notices and hopefully shall never encounter any problems regarding the video. My mash-up is actually a promotion for Disney and the song Firewoman so I think Disney and Sony should be thankful for that. :)

Here's my mash-up!

I AM HAPPY BECAUSE OF YOUtube: Video mash-up showing how we love Youtube

It cannot be denied the fact that a lot of Filipinos now are fond of multimedia and graphic arts and also  doing remixes of media content and coming up with a new creative content out of the original.  If there is one thing that I think is our advantage as Broadcast Communication degree candidates and students over those who just see Youtube as an avenue to generate income by simply making fun out of themselves, is the fact that we study and discuss Copyright, Copyright Issues and its implications to the videos or any content we produce.

Before coming up with my mash-up video, I spent 10 straight hours of watching videos and trying to make a mash-up with different themes from government to political economy, to feminism. But I just cannot see myself to those themes. As I watched Ryan Higa's channel and searched for more videos of Wong Fu Production, I saw this video of Ryan with a beginning title "My Youtube Story." That got my attention and I was surprised that it was one of the many videos uploaded for the 5th anniversary celebration of Youtube this year. So I watched similar videos and searched for other uniques stories and came with a topic.

I thought of a video mash-up that transverse the notion that we upload only to feature ourselves and forgetting to appreciate the technology that puts our videos and hosts it online which is Youtube. This video mash-up is dedicated to Youtube for making us entertained and happy.

After making the video, I sent a message to the original owners for their consent. And out of the nine producers, only one replied and he said that I can use his video as long as I do not earn profit from it. And so I told him that it is purely for academics, and he then allowed me to use his video.

I remember our professor Ma'am Data as she said in class that the videos we produce are projects and when we upload them in Youtube or in other hosts, there is a high possibility of it to be used by other individuals on the internet and to come up with a new idea out of your original product. Yes, I agree with Ma'am Data because it is true and has been proven already online that whatever project you do, so long as you properly cite your source, and as long as you have a valid input therein.

To keep you from not waiting, here is my last BC 148 video production, my mash-up. I hope you like it as I much as I did while doing it.

This video would not have been possible without the inspiration from my BC 148 Interactive Broadcasting class which is one of the factors that inculcated in me the love for Youtube. Thank you very much classmates and Ma'am Data!

The Mash Up- La la la

A student’s dream for a creative requirement would be that there would be no rules—just give a medium and the limits and that’s it. However this “dream” could also be the same dreaded “rule”. Given the mashup assignment in class, there was no specific theme required, it was all up to us individually. This perk was the cause of the long dragging concept thinking for the mash-up. Yes. It took me quite a while what I was going to mash-up. Being the Youtube enthusiast that I am, I have seen the best of mashups and the worst. From Transformers cross Mean Girls, to Amanda Seyfried movies—I thought of a good mashup concept. I even watched full length movies to see if the lines would fit. At last, I had a thing in mind. Next step is to get the scenes from the movie file themselves. And here starts the long hours of converting and the malfunction of files. The movies I have have an extension file of .avi. Surprisingly they can’t be read by iMovie, the software I was going to use for the editing. I tried converting them to something that my beloved iMovie can read, mpeg-4. So I did. I converted Dear John movie first, then it converted only the first 3 minutes of the movie. So scrap. I tried looking for scenes on Youtube, but there are only few scenes in the movie present. I did this process for a few movies and yes—wasted my time; I didn’t get to use any of the material. So I scrapped everything and started thinking of a mashup concept again – this time considering the availability of the videos I will be using. So I decided I’ll get all video’s from Youtube. Then I was watching David Choi one afternoon, then KABAAM. I had the idea! So there, that’s how my mashup came to be.

Limiting factors: source of videos, hard-headed video editing software, poor quality audio

In the future if I do make mashups like what I did, I would really be considering my own remix of the song! Thanks to suggestions! WOOOT

MASH-UP: The English Irony

Why are people who don't speak English as a first language mocked when they falter in their English, while foreigners or people who grew up in other countries are labeled cute here in the Philippines when they mess up our local language?

Hello, Ladies. ;)

Sooo, I made this mash-up dedicated to two of the things I love the most about this year: INCEPTION and AXE OLD SPICE. This is just a 30-second video, using the audio from the Axe Old Spice commercial starring Isaiah Mustafa, and clips from the Inception trailer. Strutting!Leo + Hello!Ladies = love. :))

-------------------

As human beings who like to create new things, we would love to assume that what we thought of and created is entirely original, because these are our ideas, our own concepts. But we have to face the fact that nothing is original anymore, and that there are laws that we have to abide by in order to function in this world, to maintain the "natural order of things" aka we don't get sued for copyright infringement, plagiarism, and the like. :)) That is why no matter how much I would like to claim that my idea for this mash-up is mine, the content I used aren't. And I would eventually have to credit the original "owners" of these content.

In a way, that thought is indeed stifling. Having to watch our backs and properly crediting is the way to go if we want to continue publishing and sharing on the net, because the owners to the rights of copyrighted material will sue us. Everything comes with a price these days. Harhar. :)) But then again, there are still a lot of people who get away with it. The intarnets is just too vast, and maybe someday, even I can get away with it. (But I can't really do that now lest I want the professor to kill me, jk. :P)

Okay, finally I am done uploading my mash-up :)
I dedicate this project to my dad because I want him to know how much I love him.

My mash-up was all about father and child relationship. The song that I used was YOU ARE MY HERO by Teresa James and the videos I used were from different clips from different commercials.

Mix and Match (for more "kilig" factor)

I made my very first mash-up project two days ago and it was really fun (though tiring) to do. I liked the way my classmates responded after I showed them the video I mashed up; "nakakakilig" was what they said.

It was a really different experience being the one who does the videos similar to what we see mostly in YouTube. I can't believe they have all the time they can allot for creating these kinds of project. I thought it was really amazing creating something like that. That's why even though mine didn't work out as planned, I still feel proud for my first mash-up project.

Yeah, it didn't work out as planned. I had technical problems such as wrong video formats thus, the original concept of my mash-up was not carried out by the end result. I had to resort to stock videos to be able to finish my project. But at least it ended up alright.

In terms of Copyright issues, I was really bothered after completing my project. I thought I might get sued for using the videos from YouTube. So I had this urge to put a disclaimer at the end of the video. I'm saying it here again, I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THESE VIDEOS AND THE MUSIC.

But all in all, creating mash-ups is fun! I'm looking forward to doing it again. Here's my project by the way if you want to check it out:

MASH UP

Hi guys! I am really sorry I couldn't come to class. My baby Drue was sick so I had to take care of him. Anyways, here's my mash-up. :) I had quite fun with it and I was glad that the sources of my vids approved of my using them. :) What I came up with is actually my philosophy in life. :D Let's all live happily until the last moment of our lives. -Kyra Yambao

Mash Up: Every Girl's Dream?

At last! After hours of working and waiting I’ve successfully uploaded my mash-up! To my surprise Youtube didn’t allow my efforts to be seen on the web. Apparently, FOX claims that they own some of the materials I used. Before uploading, I observed how other users get away with using the works of different “artists”. Many indicated the statement “I do not own anything” on the description box of the recreated work. But I don’t understand why it didn’t work in the case of my vid. I even typed my sources in the said box though it was already incorporated in the video.
Also, I saw that there are materials where users neglected to name their source or the original artists, especially for songs used in slide show presentations. But these uploads were not blocked. I assume that a lot of these users are not associated with the artists or copyright owners of the work. If this assumption is correct, does this mean that they had to pay the copyright just so they can come up with a 2 to 3 minuter that aids audience to learn the lyrics of songs or maybe even just for the heck of making one? I think this lopsided process of halting materials points us to the issue of ownership. A big company such as FOX could easily take measures to safe guard their products as well as the supposed profit they can obtain from it. But come on, I don’t expect to dig up anything monetary from their product.
Forming the rules and laws that will oversee the interaction in the cyber world is still a struggle for business industries, creators and the aspirants. But since there are those who stand that the rights they hold to their products when positioned in the tri-media be also translated in the same manner on the internet, wouldn’t it be rational to also carry the “privileges” granted for certain groups (and purposes) such as the academe to access and handle these materials for no or minimal cost?
The magnitude of what new media holds still seems too big for industries that loaded and matured with the aid of the first three media. Finding their place in this new playground is tough for many of them as the nature of this medium swaps the grasp of power.

An Icon speaks

Official Statement

Thanks to those who say that we are not the official campaign for UP Pep. We never claimed to be the official. If you ask the coach and members of the pep themselves, they never endorsed anything 'official' except for cheering classes to wear their PE shirts, which are white. So we're trying to drum up positivity and unity by ourselves. If you really want to officially be part of this UP spirit you would spread positivity in your own way, not by bringing others' efforts down. Thanks and see you at the CDC.

“TAKE IT OFF FOR UP PEP!”

Welcome to the "Take it off for UP Pep" Campaign!

‘Take it off for UP Pep!’ is a campaign to support the UP Pep Squad in the 2010 UAAP Cheer Dance Competition. Its primary goal is to reborn the UP school spirit as we push our limits to wear our UP pride. “Take it off for UP Pep!’ is a liberating way to declare that the UP Maroons fight!

The campaign is a two-week long activity that starts on September 1 and ends on September 12, 2010 at the Araneta Coliseum during the UAAP Cheer Dance Competition.

There are three ways to join the campaign.

Option 1

Step 1. Take a picture or video of yourself or with your friends while chanting/hollering/singing/declaiming/zarzuela-ing the official UP cheer. Be as creative and enthusiastic as you want!

Step 2. Then send your videos and photos to upweberkads@gmail.com on or before September 4, 2010.

We will pick the most enthusiastic and zealous videos and photographs, then edit them together to create a viral video that will spread all over the Web!

Option 2

Step 1. Prepare your stunts and voices on September 2, starting at 1.30 pm.

Step 2. Look for the gorgeous guys and girls of the BC 148 class who will be wearing a maroon top. We will be visiting the colleges of CSSP, Business Administration, Engineering and Human Kinetics (we chose the colleges because they’re the crossroad buildings for every UP Diliman student). If you are in the vicinity, please do drop by!

Step 3. Approach us and ham it up for our cams. We promise not to edit anything out!

Option 3

Step 1. Watch the UAAP Cheer Dance Competition at the Araneta Coliseum on September 12.

Step 2. Join us in supporting the UP Pep by wearing a white shirt under a maroon top if you are a member of the general audience.

NOTE: UP Cheering classes and students are REQUIRED to wear their PE Shirt or a white Tshirt.

Step 3. Then TAKE OFF your maroon top and wave it in the air after the UP Pep finishes its routine. Show that white! Show our united UP spirit.

When we're done editing the video, you will be able to check it out on our youtube account: http://www.youtube.com/user/upweberkada.

Thanks for stopping by. We look forward to seeing you paticipating in not just one, but all the ways to show support for the UP PEP SQUAD!

Demonstrate that UP pride and join us as we go all the way.

Mediocrity = Philippines?

Tell me what you think about this proposition:

"Political apathy and a willingness to accept a low common denominator of performance have taken their toll on the psyche of the Philippine people."

That was written by Daniel Wagner of the Huffington Post, as he analyzed the two big events that transpired for the Philippines within 24 hours: the bus hostage situation and Miss Universe.

He said we are a nation without hope.

I say we are a nation that puts our hope in the wrong things.

What do you say?

PODCAST: Bringing lectures and seminars on cyberspace

We have a major production in my BC 148 or Interactive Broadcasting class and that is to make a video podcast on How to's but that I have not started yet. I know, my partner Ivy and I will air our production on the 19th yet I have not started it.

I may not have started doing the assigned podcast in class but I have started podcasting a lecture on the web! It was the lecture of Dr. Ed Portugal in our BA 101 class. To know the story about the lecture click here. If you wanna hear the entire playlist of the podcast click here. To check my podcast channel on podbean, click here.

Yesterday afternoon, while I got a chance to get out of my Comm 140 classroom to buy some snakcs, I saw Ma'am Data and asked her if she knows a free host for podcasts. She suggested Podcast Ally but when I checked it out, it was not really my type of thing so I googled for other free hosts. Then I found PodBean and I was interested on that site so I decided to make an account there where I can upload my podcasts.

I am pleased knowing that internet applications nowadays such as Podcasts and even RSS Feed, allow you to share your stuff on the cyberspace and makes it viral- reaching larger audience. I believe that it is one of the most significant tasks of the internet and that is to share what you know to contribute to others knowledge as well. It's a mutual relationship among producers and prod-users.

BC 148 does not only teach you the know-hows on the net but also teaches you the value of sharing and acknowledging the source. It's not that I am not for the productions it's just that I am not the production type of guy. As a matter of fact, I do not want to have production classes since I think it kills you. This class has a production but the type of prod that makes you enjoy it while doing it.

There you go, I have to end blogging now since I need to start doing the script of the podcast production since Ivy might get really even at me.

VIRAL-ity: On RSS Feed and Syndication

Finally I got to apply RSS on my sites!
I am happy having a class such as BC 148 or the Interactive Broadcasting especially having a professor who is really into these things on cyberspace. She introduces a lot of facts and things we can do on the internet and how to expand our horizons especially on the posts we make.
Now, one of the things we discussed, and I reported on this in fact, is on RSS Feed and Syndication.
It allows you to make your blogs, or podcasts viral on the internet. As Google Feed burner states:

"Feeds are a way for websites large and small to distribute their content well beyond just visitors using browsers. Feeds permit subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a web portal, news reader, or in some cases good old email. Feeds also make it possible for site content to be packaged into "widgets," "gadgets," mobile devices, and other bite-sized technologies that make it possible to display blogs, podcasts, and major news/sports/weather/whatever headlines just about anywhere."

One more point is that, since it allows you to make your ideas or posts viral, it can reach Yahoo News, if and only if it deserves to. I saw one time especially in the Yahoo Philippine News an article made by a student and I thought that it came from Yahoo per se but it is actually from a blog.

So here I am wondering what this RSS Feed may lead me into. Anyway, here is the feed of my blog. You might want to subscribe therein.

So guys, start adding RSS Feed on your blogs or podcasts, too! See you on the net!

UPDATE:
When I checked my twitter, the feed was already there!
Truly, it makes your posts VIRAL! :)

I SEAL-ed the deal!

by Kem

I recently did something for the cause I joined, PETA. I know we're supposed to join or be active for a month but I liked PETA somehow and grew fond of it. So I always take time in reading the subscription emails they send me. The latest thing I did for PETA was to sign an online petition urging Canada's Prime minister to stop the seal slaughter.

Seals are very pretty and nice creatures and I believe they deserve to live peacefully in the wild. I'm not angry to those who do it because we can't change what already happened anyway. But what we can change is the future. We can share to everyone that seals already had experienced enough cruelty from humans, therefore we must stop now.

I "liked" PETA in Facebook and invited people to join this advocacy because I'd like to share to them this knowledge. Signing and promoting the online petition for the prevention of the seal slaughter is something I did that made me feel good. Now I guess I can say that I seal-ed the deal. :)

Insects in MOTION - -

On a collaborative project...

While I was trying to come up with a statement that would complement this picture taken by Ms. Mikka Marcaida, I saw something strange.

It’s something that is hard to equate with my advocacy. But I felt that it’s humorous enough for people to realize that like human beings, insects live in motion too.

--

Now, kindly look at the picture on a bigger scale. Analyze it again.

It says “INSECTS ARE BEE-SEE TOO”. Try to SEE how the “BEE” works which will answer how insects make sense of our BUSY word (meaning: Engaged in activity, as work; occupied--the free dictionary.com)

What are they doing??

If you have figured it out, well that’s good for you. ;-)

If not, try to evaluate yourself. Why on earth didn’t you notice that? HAHAHA! :D

It’s humorous, right? :D

INSECTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO :)

A Call for Action.

With the natural calamities that we have been experiencing for the past months, we can sort of envision the future of mankind. We see several predictions on the big screen. Experts have different claims on why these disasters are happening. We think. We assume. But whatever it is that’s running in our minds, there’s one thing that stands out, the environment - one of the most pressing issues that we must address.

During my childhood years, I was exposed to the abundance of nature as my family and I would usually spend our summer vacation in Bohol. I can recall how we would make hand-made "antipara" (goggles) that we would use for snorkelling the next day. We get to take a rest with the relaxing sound of the waves. Everything felt so natural not until the regular white beach front just across our ancestral house evolved to a now commercialized beach resort. Suddenly, tourists are all over the place and waste disposal became a problem. It was a mess. Then, I came to realize man's co-existence with the environment.
--
Years later while I was walking around the CAL Building over the summer, I saw this poster about a Global Youth Education Program that would expose students in various environmental situations. I applied for it and went through a screening process until I reached the final interview. Then just recently (June 28), I received a call as confirmation that I was accepted to the program and is one of the four representatives of the Philippines to the Denso Youth for Earth Action 2010. click here ",)

Thus, when asked to join an online group for a cause, the first thing that came to my mind was the word “environment”. I joined the The Nature.Net forums in GardenWeb.com where members are able to share stories and pictures of their encounters with Mother Nature. I particularly contributed to the forum called “Sustaining our Environment”. click here. ",)

I believe that the power of speech is such a good tool to affect and influence someone’s view and/or perspective on a particular issue. I blog about our environment. I blog about the pollution I experience commuting from one place to another. I rant. I inspire. Some may agree and relate while others may remain silent. There are different reactions. But for me the more important thing is, I speak up. I share my realizations and learning. If I blog about the future of this world and how it is in danger, some may reluctantly admit that they care. But at least, I informed them. And I believe eventually they will speak up as well. They will speak their mind. They will debate. And hopefully the debate is to change the system for the betterment of the environment.

“...We are the green people. But we must come to realize it for it to exist.”

“... A forum can be an eye opener for the green people to realize their worth, to be the protectors of our Mother Nature.”

In the end, whatever cause we may support, whatever advocacy we may have in our hearts, we must not forget to share it because it is in the art of sharing that we are able to make a significant call for action. ",)

Balangingi in Bandar Sunway

Hello All!

There's a lot of hard, computing science papers here, and I feel like my head is swimming from all the computational terms and concepts, but when I come up for air (and coffee) I am able to process the seminars.

A lot of the talks here are about ambient intelligence, intelligent environments and their applications in real life. I know it sounds terribly technical but it is simply this: technology that helps create environments that help humans live in - and with - automated places. These can be homes, schools, offices, shopping malls, or transportation vehicles. It's "embedded and cognitively invisible technology in the physical world." Technology that makes tasks efficient but is not invasive. But they're pervasive, and yet you don't "see" them. Keri?

Some examples: mobile learning, ID codes in almost everything to track them, customer-centered designs, smart homes which "tell" you things according to your needs and preferences. Virtually everything you see in a science fiction movie.

In fact, there was a session that encouraged fictional creations that would push scientific and research methodologies. It's multi-disciplinary, and it's about time. :) I can tell you more when we meet next!

Hope everything's going well with your planning and conceptualization. Will be looking forward to seeing/hearing about what you came up with. See you soon!

Animal Instinct and Green Minds

It suddenly occurred to me that I already had an advocacy way before this class even started. I am a member of the Greenpeace email ring. I totally forgot about it! Shame on me for not being green-minded enough. Shame on me for actually forgetting that I signed up for this. So my resolution: Be active and participate. You'll just have to wait and see how that turns out!

And then this lead to me thinking about this new organization that I recently joined: PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). One of the things mentioned on their site was how people should strive not to eat animals, and instead go green = vegetarian. As a carnivore with such a humongous love for pork, this hit a chord in me. I cringe at the thought of seeing a cute piggie killed but at the same time I love the taste of liempo. So there lies the problem. Now, I'm considering trying to become a vegetarian. It's not impossible, I've seen it done before. Case in point: My high school friend hated veggies with a passion. As in she wouldn't even go near them much less eat them. Then 2 years ago, she decided to become a vegetarian. Not even a pesco vegetarian, you know, the type who eat fish and other seafood? No, she went full veggie-mode. And well, she's still one now. She doesn't even crave for meat anymore. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the idea. Taking my cue from Inception (awesome movie!), I will try to toy with this idea. So again, we'll see how this turns out. In the meantime, I'll surely observe the other tenets of becoming a champion for animals!

And this concludes my post. Lol.:)

Signing in from Bandar Sunway, Malaysia!

Hello All!

I'm in the land of kopitiam and teh tarik to deliver a paper on web video's implications on the media and how amateurs online are creating intelligent environments.

PHEW! What a mouthful.

I'll try to send updates as often as I can, but right now I really do have to revise my presentation. Hopefully no one walks out on me at the colloquium. :)

Wish me luck guys!

PS: You can check out more about the conference here and here.

Internet is following me

Remember the time when we discussed about certain ads that pop out according to our preferences? Well, I just experienced that on Twitter! I tweeted about Inception, then a minute after, this tweet mention me (@marjiii) and I clicked the link and it led me to amazon with an Inception DVD for sale! Hanep.
